UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural right report focuses on the grave impact fundamentalism & extremism have on the cultural rights of women.

In her latest report to the Human Rights Council, Karima Bennoune – the United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights – focuses on the grave impact that fundamentalism and extremism have on the cultural rights of women.

Bennoune argues that “women’s human rights, including cultural rights, are an essential part of the fight against fundamentalism and extremism, without which it cannot succeed”.

One of the main components of the report is a global survey of women’s cultural rights, including women’s freedom of artistic expression and attacks against women artists. Freemuse is pleased to note that its analysis and documentation of these issues was considered and used in the report.

This report builds on her previous report focused on the impact and threat of fundamentalism and extremism to cultural rights, and the global, urgent challenge it poses, which must be combatted with a human rights approach.
