On 24 August 2016, Arterial Network, a civil-society network based in Africa, released its compilation of essays, stories and reflections on the state of freedom of creative expression in the continent entitled ‘How Free is FREE?’.
The publication comprises writings by 25 authors across 14 countries in the continent, including Senegalese author Boubacar Boris Diop, Zimbabwean poet and novelist Chenjerai Hove, and South African activist and judge Albie Sachs.
The network put out a call in September 2014 through its Artwatch Africa project for writers, journalists and researchers in Africa to share their ideas, opinions and expertise on the numerous aspects around the freedom of creative expression. The purpose of the project is to defend the freedom of creative expression on the continent, and with this publication one can hear from the artists, activists and thinkers themselves about their experiences and the environment they live, work in and study.
Arterial Network, established in 2007, is a network of artists, cultural activists, entrepreneurs, enterprises, NGOs, institutions and donors active in Africa’s creative and cultural sectors, and seeks to create civil society networks of cultural role players, empowering their work in cultural development across the continent.
